During her life with Lewes, Evans suffered the disapproval of her older brother Isaac, who cut off all contact with her. The two eloped to the Continent in 1854, then lived together as husband and wife until Lewes death in 1878. Knowing this, Evans and Lewes pursued their relationship anyway. Contemporary marriage law prevented Lewes from obtaining a divorce from his adulterous wife the law held that, having condoned the adultery previously, he now had no grounds for divorce. In 1850 Evans moved to London where she worked as a translator and editor, and fell in love with the writer and editor George Henry Lewes, a married man. Born in 1819 to a prosperous estate manager, Marian Evans spent her youth much as her heroine did, in reading and outdoor activities. The Mill on the Floss was the second novel Marian Evans published under the pseudonym George Eliot. ![]()

6/26/2023 0 Comments Shūsaku endō books![]() ![]() With the A-bomb attack on Nagasaki looming in the distance, Endō depicts ordinary people trying to live lives of faith in a wartime situation that renders daily life increasingly unbearable. Shūhei’s dilemma deepens when he faces conscription into the Japanese military, conflicting with the Christian belief that killing is a sin. Endō alternates scenes between Nagasaki-where the growing love between Sachiko and Shūhei is imperiled by mounting persecution-and Auschwitz, where the priest has been sent. Meanwhile, a Polish Franciscan priest and former missionary in Nagasaki, Father Maximillian Kolbe, is arrested after returning to his homeland. ![]() But life becomes increasingly difficult for them and other Christians after Japan launches wars of aggression. In the 1930s, two young Japanese Christians, Sachiko and Shūhei, are free to play with American children in their neighborhood. Sachiko, set in Nagasaki in the painful years between 19, is the story of two young people trying to find love during yet another period in which Japanese Christians were accused of disloyalty to their country. In novels such as Silence, Endō Shūsaku examined the persecution of Japanese Christians in different historical eras. ![]() 6/25/2023 0 Comments Fury born book![]() I would categorize it as New Adult, which I desperately hope will eventually be a more solidified genre. And Simon was by far my favorite character I can’t wait to learn more about him in the next book. ![]() While I wasn’t a huge fan of Rielle’s character, I found Eliana to be interesting and flawed. Rielle can perform all seven kinds of elemental magic, and enters a series of trials to prove that she is the Sun Queen. Two queens, the Sun Queen and the Blood Queen, are prophesied to either break or save the world.
